Signal Restaurant breakfast manager, Quanita Brenner or Q as she is affectionately known, has one of the busiest jobs in the hotel, overseeing the team who pulls together one of the finest hotel breakfasts in the city every single day with complete professionalism. She has been the breakfast manager since September 2010, when she started at Cape Grace. We get to know Q bit better…
What do you love the most about your job at Cape Grace, and what helps you get out of bed so early every morning?
I love the people that I work with and knowing that we are all working towards the same goal, which is guest satisfaction. We are creating a ‘home away from home’ experience – I wish I had breakfast like this served to me at home! Secondly, I get to meet all the in-house guests where I make new friends and build relationships. Many of our guests are regulars, which is really nice.
Rumour has it that you always get to know each of your guests by name. Is this true?
There is always something about the guests that makes me remember their name. Be it the colour of their hair, special glasses that they wear or the funny jokes that they share with me over breakfast.
What are the challenges of the job, and how do you motivate your team?
The breakfast rush is always a challenge – everyone ends up coming to breakfast at the same time. Comments and positive feedback from our guests is motivation on its own for the team.
What do you think are the hallmarks of an excellent hotel breakfast?
We focus on personal attention to detail for each guest, and go out of our way to ensure that any special dietary requirements are met too.
Do you ever get to sit and eat breakfast? If so, when do you eat?
Someone needs to do a quality check in the morning before service and I have the honour of fulfilling this duty – my favourite is the potato rosti.
Breakfast prices start from R175 for a continental, R225 for a full English and is served daily from 06h30 till 11h00. Call Signal Restaurant on 021 410 7080 for more information. Bookings are essential
