apples

Today is APPLE DAY! If you think it has something to do with a famous technology company you’d be barking up the wrong apple tree!  ‘Apple Day’ was started by a charity called Common Ground in Covent Garden, UK in 1990 and is still being celebrated 23 years later.

Cape Town has a large apple industry. Known in South Africa as the place ‘where the apples come from’ Elgin produces varieties like Granny Smith, Golden Delicious, Starking, Fuji and Pink Lady – guaranteed to tingle all taste buds!

To further enhance your apple enjoyment, Signal Restaurant is open 7 days a week – and because we know that an ‘apple a day keeps the doctor away’, we suggest booking a table to try one of the delicious new dishes on our Dinner Menu.  Executive Chef, Malika van Reenen has incorporated apples into her version of a Sunday favourite – roast pork.  Her main dish of confit free-range pork belly and braised pig’s cheek is served with a potato galette, apple puree, braised red cabbage, caramelised apple and a ginger jus.    And if you rather prefer your apples as a dessert, try the torched meringue with molasses sponge served with mango butter, apple sorbet and lime.

If you have a great Apple Day recipe or top tip, we’d love to hear it.
