In our hugely successful season of Vintage Wine & Dine events, our penultimate wine and food pairing evening is with Andrew Gunn of Iona Wines on 25 October 2012. As usual, we go behind the scenes to ask a few questions.
Q. IF YOU COULD DO ANY OTHER JOB IN THE WORLD, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
A. A teacher, I love seeing people grow and develop.
Q – WHAT ‘CHEAP & CHEERFUL’ WINE WOULD YOU RECOMMEND?
A – Iona’s own Sophie Te’blanche (the most famous woman never to exist!)
Q – CORK OR SCREW CAP?
A – Cork for barrel aged wines and screw cap for aromatic varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, etc.
Q – WHAT’S THE BEST CURE FOR A HANGOVER?
A – A freshly squeezed beetroot, carrot, apple and ginger juice with a couple of Propains!
Q – HOW’S YOUR COOKING?
A – My wife Rozy is the best cook, but I’ve been known to make a good Bouef Bourguignon!
Q – WHAT WOULD YOU ORDER AS YOUR LAST MEAL?
A – Without doubt a curry! With all the accompaniments including roti prepared by Rozy!
Q – WHAT CAN WE EXPECT FROM THE 2012 HARVEST?
A – The first harvest with our new winemaker Werner Muller will see Iona continuing to improve; good cool, dry weather produced clean, healthy grapes.
Q – TELL US ONE FUN FACT ABOUT YOURSELF THAT NOT EVERYONE KNOWS
A – I sucked my thumb until I was 12 years old!
Q – WHAT ARE YOUR PARTING WORDS OF WISDOM?
A – We all need an endeavour, no matter how humble, we are links in a chain, one no important than another and as strong as the weakest link.
Our final Wine & Dine evening for 2012 will be with Rustenberg Wines on 29 November. Book now to secure a place. Call Chantelle on 021 410 7097 or email. To read all our fascinating winemaker Q&A’s take a look here.
