Christmas has arrived at Cape Grace and I was lucky enough to be part of the fabulous team of Christmas ‘Elves’ who worked tirelessly behind the scenes throughout the night.
We started on Saturday 7 December with 13 white Christmas trees, 5 boxes of red decorations and rolls and rolls of red ribbon! But it was Sunday that tested the Elves’ hearts and determination! We met in the hotel basement at 22h00 after which each Elf was dispatched to various corners of the hotel to complete the makeover before our guests woke at 06h00.
The highlight this year has to be the hotel reception Christmas tree – a recycled treasure and one which is the talk-of-the-town! At 3 metres tall and taking over 6 hours to assemble, it is filled with salvaged hotel proteas and fynbos, all painted in varying shades of red. The only additional trim is white fairy lights, which transform the area once night has fallen.
As you approach the hotel and as you leave to walk over the Bascule Bridge, each white flower pot has been decorated with a great big red ribbon. And as you pass our friendly doormen, two twinkling 2 metre red wreaths provide a truly festive welcome.
Once inside, there are little touches all around – from long legged felt dolls hiding on shelves, papier mâiché reindeer with bright dotty bows, to bowls of candy canes and other edible festive treats. No floor has been left untouched, so keep your eyes peeled!
Christmas anywhere in the world is such a joyous occasion and at Cape Grace it is no exception. I am extremely proud to have been part of ‘Team Elf’ and even though I was awake for close on 30 hours over the weekend, I would do it again in a Festive heart-beat! Here’s to next year!
Happy Holidays everyone!
