The Maboneng Township Arts Experience is a national public arts initiative that turns homes in townships into galleries, and outdoor spaces into performance districts. We work humbly with home owners and families to create a warm intimate arts environment within our townships. After 10 years, The Maboneng Township Arts Experience has turned over 70 homes into galleries, exhibited over 50 artists and encouraged township residents to invest in art.

The Maboneng Township Arts Experience started in 2001 when Alexandra native and artist, Siphiwe Ngwenya realised that art awareness was lacking in his neighbourhood. Since then the project has grown from its humble roots to a national programme that hosts Annual Township art festivals and includes various permanent township art routes, attracting numerous visitors. One such permanent art route is called the Langa TAG (Township Art Gallery) situated in the Langa Township of Cape Town. 10 Home galleries are open for the whole week (except Sundays).

In bridging the gap between the cities and the townships, innovative and alternative means will need to be enforced. We have seen our venture bring in many visitors from surrounding areas and all over the world. This is an amazing way to get rid of township’s stigma.

Our aim is for township and city organisations to get together through the arts to work against the forces that split us apart.
