There’s one event in Cape Town that manages to bring many communities and ages together for traditional fun of the fair – the Community Chest Carnival at Maynardville Park. This event’s held annually in Wynberg and this year, the Community Chest Carnival 2012 will take place from Wednesday 29 February until Saturday 3 March.
It began as a theatrical garden party in 1954 and over the past six decades has evolved into a pageant of food, entertainment and family fun. Over the four days, it attracts more than 100 000 people, but this extravaganza of all things carnival is only made possible by the efforts of some 7 000 volunteers.
In all the joy of the event is a greater good because the carnival raises funds for some 429 social welfare organisations supported by Community Chest across the Western Cape. These provide vital services ranging from healthcare and rehabilitation to child support and care of the elderly.
