Cape Grace steps into summer with a sparkling new Gift Shop open to all lovers of local Cape Town and African-inspired gifts.
The gift shop has received a complete transformation, from a small display space next to the reception, to a big, beautiful, walk-in gallery adjoining the Platandia platinum, tanzanite and diamond showroom.
The gift gallery is sourced and run by Melanie Burton, while her husband Rob presents the precious jewels in Platandia and creates bespoke jewellery with diamonds and rare tanzanites set in platinum. As with all Cape Grace experiences, it’s a personalised affair where you can learn about the individual artists or craftspeople that made the items on display.
Melanie’s philosophy is to find the right mix of local and African products that have a story to tell. This ranges from striking oil paintings by local roving wildlife artist Cobus van der Walt, to exquisitely beaded wire animals and trophy heads made under a tree by Cape Town-based Zimbabwean crafters. Ostrich feather, leather and Nguni handbags by Rarity Handbags are very popular, as are Namji fertility dolls from Cameroon.
Each month on our Artist Exposé we take a look behind the scenes and bring you insights into artists and their work. This will continue so watch this space, but better yet, pay a visit to Cape Grace’s new shop and admire it for yourself!
