On the 8 December 2010, two family men who just turned 40 thought it was time to raise their adrenaline levels, so they decided to set a record for taking part in the most adventure sports in one day.
Johan Radcliffe of Cape Town, publisher of DIRTY BOOTS Adventure Guide and Darron Raw of SWAZI TRAILS and the SWAZI XTREME Adventure Race, are no strangers to adrenaline and this was their way of demonstrating how “life begins at 40!” They are now challenging the rest of the world to beat their record.
They clocked up 18 adventures during the HI-TEC Dawn-2-Dusk Adventure World Record, starting at 5.30 am and finishing at 7.30pm, they completed the following challenges in this order:
1.) Quad Bike Driving in the Atlantis dunes with Melk “Bos” 4×4.
2.) Sandboarding the Atlantis Dunes with Revel Adventures.
3.) Off-Road Driving with All Terrain 4X4 in the Atlantis Dunes.
4.) Tandem Skydive from 9000ft with a free-fall of 35sec with Skydive Cape Town.
5.) Gyrocopter seeing the scenic Cape Peninsula from the air with Aerosport.
6.) Harley Davidson pillion ride with Cape Bike Travel.
7.) Downhill Tobogganing at Africa’s only summer toboggan track on steel with Cool-Runnings.
8.) Abseil from the top of Table Mountain with Abseil Africa.
9.) Tandem Paraglide from Lion’s Head with Cape Town Tandem Paragliding.
10.) Underground Canal Walk; an eerie adventure in the ancient water canals below the city Cape Town with Figure of 8.
11.) Mountain Biking in Tokai Forest with Daytrippers.
12.) Target and Clay Pigeon Shooting in the quarry with False Bay Gun Club.
13.) Vintage Sidecar Ride along the coast with Cape Sidecar Adventures.
14.) High Speed Boat Ride towards Cape Point at up to 100km per hr with Simon’s Town Boat Company.
15.) Coasteering featuring gulley swims, big rock jumps and penguin play with Gravity Adventures.
16.) Sea Kayaking in Simon’s Town around the Boulders Beach coastline, with Simon’s Town Sea Kayaking.
17.) Zip Line Fooffie Slide, leaping from the top of a giant gum tree and whizzing down a 130-metre fooffie slide with SunScene.
18.) Horse ride on Noordhoek Beach with Noordhoek Beach Rides

What a super concept! And it is also the most wonderful thing that any ‘normal’ person can do without being a super athlete. Now the challenge would be to see whether anyone can better this record set by Darron and Johan. What a day of adventures they’ll have
Would just like to take this opportunity to thank all the adventure operators who assisted with this event. Without their professional attitude we would never have been able to fit 18 adventures into one day. Well done Cape Town! I however have two more up my sleeve if somebody beats our record. That is a challenge.
Oh by the way my favourite was the MTB in Tokai. Great fun.
I reckon Cape Town can now claim a position alongside or ahead of Interlaken and Queenstown.
