TOP 5 FLOWERS IN BLOOM AND WHAT THEY HAVE TO SAY

There is nowhere more colourful in Cape Town than the flower market at the lower end of Adderley Street, with masses of flowers at the best prices in town.

Here are flower seller, Gairo Spannenberg’s top pick of March blooms and some flower meanings to take into account when buying:

1.) Carnations – give in celebration of a special occasion, especially a mother’s birthday (carnations signify a mother’s love).

2.) Lilies; stargazer and joseph - the May birth flower also used to commemorate a 30th wedding anniversary. White lilies convey sympathy and grief as well as chastity and virtue.

3.) Barberton daisies – a very positive flower associated with youth, purity and innocence

4.) Lisianthus these soft fluttering petal flowers are given as a token of thanks, or particularly to someone born under Sagittarius (22 Nov to 21 Dec).

5.) Gladioli – a stately flower perfect as a sign of remembrance.
