Ever wondered why the Car-park opposite the Caltex Garage in the V&A Waterfront is so full on Friday mornings? These days they are a dedicated meeting spot for the members of the Atlantic Triathlon Club (ATC). They use the V&A Waterfront’s canal as their training grounds, “It’s Clean, Safe and Shark Free”.
Some might call them crazy as these waters are a very chilly 14 degrees but with their wetsuits they are fully equipped and warm enough to tackle the breezy waters Cape Town. The canal is 3m wide and only 1.5m deep.
The agreement between ATC and the V&A Waterfront canal is a strict one, which includes indemnity forms so if you wanted to partake in this sport you would need to become part of the group and sport (no pun intended) their orange branded swim cap. If you fail to do so the security may remove you from the premises.
They meet most Friday mornings at 06:00. The route starts at CTICC and pass the residential area. There are available spots to climb out and jog back, or alternatively you can swim the entire route.
