HOLIDAY ACTIVITIES – TOP 5 THINGS TO DO WITH THE KIDS

The various upcoming holidays are a fantastic opportunity to spend quality time with the little ones, but it’s easy to run out of ideas of how to keep them entertained. Have no fear, the Concierge at Cape Grace is always happy to recommend kiddy-friendly activities which are also fun for the whole family. Read on for our top five suggestions of quirky places to visit around Cape Town:

1). Warrior Toy Museum – the toy museum houses a permanent display of 4 000 model cars, 500 dolls and teddy bears, miniature dolls’ houses and rooms, two fully operating railroads, lead soldier displays, ships and many other miscellaneous toys and models! 2). Grape Expectations – visit the Spier Cultural Village and Wine Estate in Stellenbosch where parents go wine tasting while kids ride a pony or stroke a cheetah at the cheetah breeding centre. Open daily from 10am – 5pm (excluding Christmas Day). Phone +27 (21) 858 1826

3). Seal Island – take a boat trip from Simon’s Town out to Seal Island, a seal and bird sanctuary where kids can watch the seals play in their beautiful natural setting. The island is home to 75 000 South African fur seals, 24 different bird species and the hunting ground of the great white shark. There are Seal Island boat trips throughout the day leaving from Simons Town. Book in advance as tickets can be sold out quickly in the high tourist summer seasons (Oct – Feb). 4). Jungle Fever – visit Monkey Town in Somerset West and see monkeys, antelope and exotic birds. Spend time in the Monkey Park doing a guided tour followed by a feeding-time talk with a knowledgeable guide. The Monkey Jungle Fun Park has trampolines, rock swimming pools, a braai area and bush pub with a restaurant and closed deck area. Open daily from 8am – 5pm. Entry fees: Children (1-2 years): R10, Children (3 – 12 years): R30 Teenagers: R50, Adults: R70.

5). Tropical Forest – Visit Butterfly World, on the N1 towards Stellenbosch, and walk amongst exotic butterflies and insects. Other activities also include a visit to the reptile bay and the spider room. Butterfly World is also a popular location for kiddies parties. Opening times: Monday to Sunday, 9am – 5pm (Except Christmas Day). Entry fees: R43 per adult, R25 for children over 3 (children under 3 are free), R111 per family (2 adults, 2 children), R37 for pensioners/college student and discount for groups (conditions apply).
