TOP FIVE SUMMER WINES

Summer is all about sunshine, seafood, berries, picnics, braaing and wine tasting. Here are five summer wines that gained 5-Stars in Platter’s South African Wines 2011:

1.) Groot Constantia Gouverneurs Chardonnay 2009; go catch your crayfish then pair it with this wine that the Platter guide describes as, “cream citrus, light spice dusting from start to finish, perfectly poised, wonderful length.”

2.) Graham Beck Pheasant’s Run Sauvignon Blanc 2010; “Waves of gooseberry, passion fruit, asparagus and raindrops on gravel minerality.”  Perfect for your picnic.

3.) Meerlust Pinot Noir 2008; pick your own strawberries to go with this fine example that is, “aromatically complex, multi-dimensional and intricate.”

4.) Kanonkop Cabernet Sauvignon 2007; may be a little too good for quaffing around the braai, but will go wonderfully with those barbequed lamb chops.

5.) Topiary Wines Blanc de Blancs Cape Classique Brut 07; the oysters should be as chilled as this bubbly for a marriage made in heaven.

    Some good picks here.

A few more I would add are:

Pinotage, 2010. Boland Cellars (from Paarl): great with anything from roast chicken to lamb shanks

Chardonnay, 2010. Riebeek (from Swartland): its pure fruit flavors would match a variety of fish and fowl dishes
