TOP 5 SUPERSTITIONS ON FRIDAY THE 13TH

It’s Friday the 13th today!

The number thirteen is considered so unlucky that many lifts in high rise buildings go straight from the 12th to the 14th floor. The superstitious amongst us may not even venture out today for fear of unlucky events. Whether you’re heading out or staying safe indoors, take a read through these 5 Top superstitions:

Friday the 13th – Today! If the month starts on a Sunday the 13th will fall on a Friday. It happens three times this year.

Walking under a ladder: Perhaps this fear stems from when criminals were hanged from the top rung of a ladder, leaving their spirits lingering beneath. Or perhaps it’s from the Christian trinity (to walk into the triangle created under the ladder would show disbelief and mark you as a Satanist.) Whatever its origins, many of us still to this day won’t willingly walk under a ladder! Strange, but true.

Horseshoe: It’s lucky to find a horseshoe and to hang one over your door, but remember never to place it with the ends pointing downwards - if you do this, it’s said that your luck will all drain out.

Breaking a mirror: Even before mirrors were manufactured, reflective surfaces were credited with the ability to look into the future. Superstition goes that to break a mirror is to shatter your own future for 7 years. But all is not lost; reverse the bad luck by burying the pieces deep in the earth.

Black cat: Good luck or bad omen? The Japanese say a black cat crossing your path is good luck and in Scotland a black feline at your doorstep means prosperity. The Ancient Egyptians treasured the black cat too, but many cultures view the animal as an unlucky omen. This could stem from the Middle Ages when the owner of a black cat might be viewed as a witch or devil worshipper.
