On the 10th of December, at the stroke of midnight, our elves transformed Cape Grace into a festive wonderland. Working tirelessly throughout the night, they alighted every surface with Christmasy touches, completing the makeover before our guests awoke at 6 am to the surprise.
Beginning at the entrance, they bedecked the line of flower pots with dazzling red bows. They tiptoed up and down the halls, where they hung glittering white wreaths, and placed delightful figurines in corners. Here and there, reindeers nestle on mantels, a Father Christmas emerges from a bouquet of proteas, and santa’s helpers, with stockinged feet, guard mail bound for the North Pole.
The cheer was spread to each and every room. Wreaths adorn guests doors, and inside, a decorated Christmas tree lights up the corner. Indeed, no floor has been left untouched, so keep your eyes peeled!
Finally, our elves then turned their attention to their pièce de résistance: the Christmas tree. At over 3 metres tall, it enjoys pride of place in our welcoming reception area. This year, it is made entirely of dried fynbos and proteas (our national flower). In keeping with our ‘white Christmas’ theme, our tree is a silvery grey that melts away to a snowflake white tip. Alongside this enchanting ensemble stands a Santa Claus himself, complete with antique wooden sleigh. His snug attire in hues of frosted greys and white complete the fantastical scene.
But that’s not where the magic ends. It wouldn’t be Christmas without the holiday treats we love best, and this year, our pastry team have pulled out all the stops. Slices of moist Christmas cake, crumbling mince pies and delectable cookies tempt guests from beneath their glass domes, while bowls of candy canes beg to be popped into bags (and mouths).
But, it’s the gingerbread houses, and fondant creations that are most impressive. Inspired by their time in Paris, our pastry chefs have crafted the most delicate of figurines that peek out from their latticed, snow-capped gingerbread homes.
