What to expect from Afternoon Tea at Cape Grace

“There are few hours in life more agreeable than the hour dedicated to the ceremony known as afternoon tea.”

— Henry James

Ah, Afternoon Tea. A time-honoured tradition that dates back to the 1800’s, when royalty declared the space between lunch and dinner a little too long to cope with.

Nowadays, it’s a wonderful way to hit pause on the day, celebrate life or loved one, and indulge in a bit old school decadence (Downton Abbey fantasties optional).

The setting

Our Afternoon Tea takes place in the hush of the Library, where heavy silk curtains, plush carpets, and book-lined walls give way unto the beautiful views of the marina, the yachts bobbing on the tranquil waters below, and Table Mountain the grande dame that presides over the affair.

Served daily from noon, Afternoon Tea at Cape Grace does not take a one-size-fits-all approach, but has several offerings that take into account different appetites and occasions.

Showcasing the creative genius of our pastry chef and team, you may opt for a single slice of cake with your cuppa (the chocolate torte is a favourite) or a Cream Tea of homemade scones with jam, lemon curd, and lashings of clotted cream of course. Our scones, in particular, are renowned for being the very best in Cape Town!

However, our Full Afternoon Tea is an experience that you should make time (and tummy room) for at least once during your visit.

Served individually on an étagère – a tiered cake stand – the traditional Afternoon Tea demands the attention of your taste buds with sweet and savoury scones, precisely cut finger sandwiches, petit fours, dainty cakes and bite-sized pastries, served with a choice of exotic loose-leaf teas or coffee.

Though there are no rules, we will begin with the savouries. Each tier is laden with dainty salmon, cream cheese and avocado mousses, sandwiches filled with egg mayonnaise or cucumber and crème fraiche, and scones ready to be slathered with butter, jam, lemon curd and extra cheese.

And then onto dessert! Pistachio Paris brest, Azelia chocolate tarts, blueberry cheesecake verrines, tropical fruit slices, and salted caramel macarons glint under flecks of gold dust. All are prepared in house by our Chef de Parties – talented artists in all things sweet, and are almost too good to eat. Almost. But one bite of any of the above, and all resistance crumbles.

But what of those with special dietary requirements? Happily accommodated, with advanced notice. In fact, the gluten-free creations are equally, if not even more delicious, so really, there’s no need for anyone to feel left out.

A note on our teas

Our teas are created in partnership with Nigiro, passionate local producers of the finest loose leaf teas and blends. Choose from Herbal Infusions like the Chamomile Flower, Herbal Highmoon, or our own Cape Grace Exclusive Blend – a blend of fruits, herbs, spices and Rooibos that is at once sophisticated, surprising, and simply divine in both scent and sip. There are also Black, White, Green, and Highland Rooibos varietals, all served in your own personal glass teapot with an egg timer to ensure your tea is brewed to perfection. Coffee, in a silver pot, is also an option, so the well-caffeinated need not feel slighted.

Add some bubbles

Elevate the occasion by adding a glass or bottle of MCC bubbly or French Champagne to your experience – especially fun when shared with group.
